Has anyone had a 3D mammogram detect inflammatory cancer? I have a diagnostic mammogram scheduled tomorrow and was just offered the option of also having 3D mammography done at same time.

3D mammography is a pretty new modality. I imagine not many places have the capibility of doing them yet if it's anything like when digital machines first came out. They generally are quite pricey pieces of equipment. I would say, "go for it" if given the opportunity, I know I would.

They said there was an additional fee not covered by insurance, but the cost is so minimal I agreed to have it done.

Like I said, go for it. Alot of insurances don't pay for MRIs either unless it's medically necessary.

I would ask for it too..but from what I understand the only way to definitively diagnosis inflammatory breast cancer is through a punch biopsy. I was dx with inflammatory breast cancer about 6 weeks ago . Initially had a mammo/ultrasound and 4 biopsies and dx with invasive ductal carcinoma. I was sure I had ibc because my symptoms lined right up...felt like I could nurse a baby and had mastitis...my dr listened and did a punch bx and low and behold I was right! Doesn't change my treatment but just my reconstruction. Good luck to you! I will be praying for you!!

Thank you! I have about half the symptoms and am extremely nervous about tomorrow's appointment.

I was told the cost was an additional $25 for the 3D, so I told them I wanted that too.

Laura... bless your heart for listening to your gut! I wish we all did that, we would be better off. So glad you are in treatment. Blessings, Sharon

Neither mammogram or ultrasound showed anything when I was diagnosed with IBC - the doctor was sure by exam and ordered an MRI which showed her the area to biopsy. This was 5 years ago and 3D mamms were not available yet. Good luck to you !

Hi! If offered... they do both 3D and regular mammo. I had it. My insurance didn't pay for the 3D mammo, but the cost for me was only $50.00. Not so bad. I feel the more testing done the better. I would go for it!!!
